The varied landscape of Auvergne includes extinct volcanoes, forests, mountains, rivers and lakes and makes up some of the most beautiful scenery in France. There are Roman towns such as Clermont-Ferrand (regional capital, and now home to the famous Michelin empire) mediaeval castles, plenty of good walking and also skiing and hang gliding for the more adventurous.
Well known for dairy produce, including many delightful cheeses, the Auvergne is also beef country, where you will find the leanest, tastiest cuts of beef. If you get the chance, try fillet of beef in a parcel of St. Nectaire cheese. Delicious! Try also the sausisson sec of Auvergne.
