The Cantal is a peaceful and unspoiled region of the Massif Central.  Whilst it is about the same size as the Lake District of Great Britain it is far less populated with tourists.  It is the ideal place for hill walking and general sightseeing.  You will see about as many people in a week in the Cantal as you would in an hour in the Lake District!

Cantal offers three major peaks:
Plomb du Cantal (6,086 ft)
Puy de Peyre-Arse (5,925 ft)
Puy Mary (5,863 ft)
all offering ski slopes with good facilities.

There are a number of chateaux worth a visit throughout the department.  Principal towns are: Aurillac, St. Flour, Mauriac.
